love life: games and fun at the standard hotel

When I came across “love life” on the yoga schedule at the Standard Hotel in Miami, I was a little puzzled. What exactly did they mean? So, I called up and asked them to explain it to me. Basically, every Sunday evening from 8PM to 12 midnight, there are games in the lobby and the outdoor baths are open for your enjoyment. Best of all, it’s free, and you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel! They change up the games every week, and there is a live DJ spinning out retro and current tunes to liven up the lobby mood.

Last Sunday, a friend and I went over to play some bingo. We may have planned to visit the outdoor baths, but it was raining that evening. We arrived at around 9:30 PM, and the lobby was filled with people. Some it appears, were guests of the hotel (as my eavesdropping revealed when they asked that their drinks be charged to the room), and others may have, like us, been locals or visitors to the area. The crowd was a mix of people, who I would guess ranged in age from about 21 – 40. There were no grandmas at this Bingo game!

While we didn’t win anything (actually, I don’t even know what the prizes were), we did have a good time. There was free popcorn, and you could order items from the restaurant’s menu like pita with hummus and other spreads in addition to cocktails and other beverages.

The only problem with the whole set up is the noise factor: it was very hard to hear the bingo numbers as they were being called. A microphone, a person with a louder voice, or simply lowering the volume of the music being spun out by the DJ could have alleviated this problem. Nobody, however, seemed to attempt to create a viable solution. But, don’t let that discourage you. It was great fun, it was free, and most of all, it was something different to do on a Sunday evening.

Oooh! I love the Standard. I’ve been there on Sundays and it’s a very nice way to end your weekend. One of their bartenders makes a great mojito — although the drinks aren’t too cheap.

Yes, it’s really a great place. I love all the funky furniture. The garden outside is nice too! Thanks for the tip on the mojitos. I’ve never had one from them.

the love life party is thrown by the group that does Poplife at Pawn Shop on saturdays. Their website is The prizes range from free stuff from the menu, to actual free stays at The Standard, a spa day, etc, etc. It is a lot of fun. Also when you valet, just let them know that you are there for the party so you can get the $4 valet parking.

Thanks for the info about the prizes and the valet parking. I got lucky and found a free spot, but those are hard to come by.

Had no idea there were any free spots in that part of town. Do share your secret spot 🙂

  • lara says:

Oh no, now I don’t know if I should 😉 Well, the spots across the street from the Standard, in front of the apartment buildings, are free. Further down, you could park on Rivo Alto, though you would have to then walk over the bridge. But, $4 is really not bad, and much better than the $12 they normally charge.
