irie isle serves it up at small axe conference June 25, 2007

http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Jamaican-Flag-Posters_i1333698_.htmI went to yet another conference this past week. This one was at the University of Miami, and was put on by the Caribbean Literary Studies Program and the Small Axe Collective. The conference theme was “Archaeologies of Black Memory,” and invited guests included David Scott, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Brent Hayes Edwards among many others. If you missed it, you can get the archived webcast here. The conversation was good, the presentations were good, and the food was good too!

I found out that the food came from the Irie Isle Restaurant in North Miami. I heard that one of the scholars there used to run this place, or still does (such is the nature of eavesdropping). Anyhow, I will definitely be scoping this place out while I am in Miami.

The food offerings over the course of the two-day conference included Jerk Chicken, Stewed Chicken, Stewed Tofu, Veggies and Tofu, and Oxtail. They were all served with a large portion of rice and peas and a few plantains. I read online that the restaurant is casual and cost-effective; a homestyle cooking take-it-to-go kind of place.

this and that in Miami June 21, 2007

Filed under: art, artists, community, culture, events, grad school, miami, recipes, this and that — lara @ 2:59 pm

I’m in Miami now to start my preliminary research about Caribbean women artists.  So, my blog posting may be sporadic over the next few weeks. I may pop in now and again to give you a heads up about some events in Miami that I will be going to.

Tonight’s tip: JAM at MAM (“happy hour with an artful twist”)

In the meantime, check out my new recipe index, which has all the recipes featured on this blog. I may add the recipes from my old blogger blog. We’ll see. Also, check out some of my daily reads, which you can find to the right of this post.

The fine print on this flyer I received by email says that 190 will be serving brunch in seven weeks. I’m not sure which date they are counting from, but if we count from this coming Sunday, then the first one would be on August 12 5 (oops!). Just my guess.

I thought I would post the info since my last blurb about 190 seems to have drawn in a lot of people looking for news on this hot spot.

meshell n’degeocello live in detroit June 19, 2007

Detroit Film Theatre
LIVE IN CONCERT: MESHELL N’DEGEOCELLO

Friday, June 29, 2007 8:00 PM

Meshell N’degeocello will play at the Detroit Institute of the Arts as part of this year’s Summer Festival.  Born in Berlin and raised in Washington D.C.  Meshell adopted the name N’degeocello, which means “free like a bird” in Swahili, which also describes her music.  She constantly continues to push boundaries with her brand of sophisticated mix of sweet, raucous, and deeply personal rock, jazz, funk, and soul.

I have to say that I am really bummed out that I will be out of town when she is here in Detroit, but this is even more of a reason for you to go and tell me all about it. She is one of my favorite artists, and her shows are interesting because they are always a bit unpredictable. She doesn’t stick to old standards, so go and brush up on some of her newer music like this or this before heading out to the show.

*Remember: leave your camera at home- there is no flash photography allowed for medical reasons.*

Tickets for Meshell Ndegeocello are available online, or by calling the DIA Box Office at (313) 833-4005, Wednesday through Sunday from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. Theater Box Office window and will call ticket pick-up opens one hour prior to the start of the show.  Parking is available on John R Street, directly across from the DFT theater entrance.

locating home . . . and an address June 18, 2007

Back of a postcard (circa 1930)

This email that my hunny received from her cousin points to a lot of what my research is looking into. I thought you may enjoy reading it as I am sure many people can relate to this type of experience.

“I’m in need of addresses to send out invitations to all. Please reply with your addresses and forward to those whose email isn’t in the list. I know some have changed; I get the unsent replies and I still need an update. Obviously the Diego Martin addresses aren’t hard. If you moved from Brazil to Michigan, Halifax to Vermont, NY to Cayman avoiding taxes, not sure what you doing with the empty apartment in Canada, TX to FL, NC to TX, renting your house and living in another, between U.S and Trinidad, or plan to move I simply don’t know where to send your invitation.”
